Virtual Classes - Autumn 2026 - Button It Up

Expand your buttonhole repertoire and discover unique options for buttons and other garment closures. This class begins with a review of the guidelines and best practices for buttonhole size, placement and orientation relative to the knitted fabric and the garment design, followed by a discussion of why these considerations are important and how buttonholes may affect the look of the garment and its longevity. 
Then, through in-class practice, we’ll explore a range of buttonhole techniques, from ones that create tiny, all-but-invisible buttonholes to one that produces a refined horizontal buttonhole that can be further enhanced with bound edges.
Our discussion will also include buttons themselves: their size, shape and material; what to do when the perfect button cannot be found; how best to attach them to the garment; and a solution that avoids attaching them entirely in order to take advantage of the way in which changing the buttons on a garment can change completely the look of the garment.
Finally, we’ll learn how to fashion buttons from I-cord and we'll consider some elegant, non-button alternatives for garment closures.

Skill level: Intermediate knitter with some previous buttonhole experience.
Homework is optional, but will give you a head start when we begin knitting in class. Directions for the homework and a list of materials you will need will be delivered via email once you have registered for the class.
The handout will be delivered via email three days before the class along with the link to join the class.

November 7: two 3-hour sessions; 10 AM - 1 PM and 3 PM - 6 PM Eastern

The Fine Print
Enrollment is limited. Registration opens at 10 AM Eastern on Thursday, October 1, and closes at midnight Eastern on Friday, October 23.
Cancellations will be accepted until the end of enrollment for a full refund less a $50 cancellation fee.
If a minimum number of registrants is not met by the end of registration, the class will be canceled and those registered will be issued a full refund.
Recordings: the class will be recorded and will be available through Saturday, November 21.
