The Long and Short of Short Rows

Not just the ‘how’, but the why’, ‘when’ and ‘where’ of short rows as well. Participants learn the various techniques used to create short rows and how to use them for perfect shoulder slopes and necklines, for armholes and sleeve shaping, for curved edges, shaped collars and V-point hems. Their use in horizontally knit garments is explored as well, as are the methods by which they may be adapted for textured and multi-colored patterns. Discussion also focuses on the structural properties of short rows:  how they may be used to shape garments for fit and their potential for graphic design. Classwork includes quarter- and half-scale garment sections that make use of the various applications of short rows for fit and shaping as well as a set of bi-color swatches for design reference.
